Third Friday Cone 6 Commercial Glazes: A Few Of My Favorite Things...

Welcome to the Third Friday Cone 6 Commercial Glaze Post…
Since it is December and I can't help but to be in the holiday spirit,
I wanted to share with you…
Some of my favorite things…
(glaze style)
It all started with this glaze…
Spectrum Glaze #1145
This is a GREAT glaze by itself or to layer with other glazes…
This is my "Autumn" glaze - by itself… Spectrum Glaze #1145.
And as you can see, there are variations…

This 1145 glaze has had some material changes over the years (one of the main ingredients in the glaze had stopped being mined about 4-5 years ago) and the new material they used changed it a bit.
But that's not all - kiln temperature, size and atmosphere are a huge factor… (HUGE!)
This is my Blue Molasses Glaze
Which is a mixture combining Spectrum 1145 with 1148.
And Blue Honey… A mixture of Spectrum 1145 +1144.
See the variations in the glaze - same glaze, different kiln firings and mixtures I have created over time...
This is my Burnt Copper Glaze.
Which combined 1145 + 1182...
Well what used to be my Burnt Copper Glaze. I had to discontinue it because as you can see - the third piece is what the combination is coming out like now with the changes.
Same with my Atlantic Seafoam Glaze - discontinued…
Spectrum 1145 + 1180 glaze combination.
That bottom piece just looked SO different than the original glaze…

So there you have it…
One of my favorite glazes of all time!
And just think: This was just one base glaze, and a few layered over it…
Wonder what it would look like if you tried mixing these on your clay body and fired it in your kiln???

What are some of your favorite glazes?

  1. 1145 is one of my favorites as well... in my small 'doll' kiln, it fired to a gorgeous almost cobalt looking blue, but my large kiln, it fires more in the gray/blue/brown range. All on a black porcelain clay. I have to try mixing it with some of my others...
    Thanks, as always, for sharing!
I think of opening my kiln as like opening a present on Christmas morning...
