September Third Friday Glazing: Coyote Cone 6 Mix of Colors

Welcome to the Beads-of-Clay Third Friday September 2010 Cone 6 Commercial Glaze Post…
This summer I started to experiment with a bunch of Coyote Cone 6 glazes and Georgies Interactive Pigments that I picked up at NCECA back in the spring.
Here is the set of colors I had picked out for my Sample Set.
I did a post earlier on the individual colors SEE HERE.
The picking out of your own colors was a special that they were running at NCECA…

Here are two test tiles, each with 6 glazes on them...
Keep in mind, the number on the back of the test tile corresponds to the glaze on the front of the tile, not as pictured. Mentally flip it to make the glaze numbers match the colors…

Then on these two test tiles, I applied Glaze #042 Shino to the entire piece...
Then applied another color on top of it to see what the reaction looked like.

The combinations that I found interesting or potentially useful for my work were then further tested...
All of the above test tiles were coated with Glaze #042, then the other glaze listed on the tile back.
Just think of all the possible combinations…
And every clay and glaze and kiln fire differently…

Now with these, I thought - ok, the clay I am using is porcelain, so it's white…
But what if I put a white glaze on it, then layer other colors?
A white clay body is supposed to enhance the color of the glaze…
So what will a white glaze do?
*Again - visually "flip" the 2nd test tile so the numbers match up with what is on the front*
Coyote Glaze #74 is brushed on the entire piece, then the numbers below it are layered on top of it and overlap each other...

Needless to say, the variations and possibilities are endless…
There have been some other glaze posts out there from other artists on their blogs with wonderful variations and results…
Just a reminder - if you are blogging about glaze tests with commercial glazes (or even ones you made yourself) you can link up your blog post to this one for a month. I have the inlinkz closing when the next post opens…

Thanks for stopping by!
Happy Glazing…

  1. Thanks for sharing! I love coyote shinos. I linked to the post I did awhile back layering shinos with celadons.

  2. I really like reading about your glaze tests, Marsha. And learning your method of keeping tract of what you do. I thought using the white glaze under the glazes gave some great results. Also the blue in your avatar flower is fabulous.

  3. Marsha, you are getting some fantastic results with these tests. I've got some of the coyote shinos and celadons that I'm hoping to get to some testing over the next couple of weeks. I'll definitely link back. Thanks so much for generously sharing your results!

  4. I've been thinking about trying some of the Coyote glazes, so will be watching for other comments on them. Newbie to all this and have been looking for some interesting commercial glazes. Thanks for sharing your results...

  5. Thanks for the comments everyone and for the link sharing… I just think it is so cool to see how these "same" glazes work on everyone's clay and kilns - not to mention surfaces and glazing techniques…

I just did some layering on some of the bisque tube beads from Marls'a Bisque Bead Supply, which is a different clay body than what I use, so I am curious to see how they come out!

Will keep the glaze test links open each month with the current post so you can link share if you want. No pressure or anything. It's like having a glaze team! Cool!
