Two New Complimentary Challenge Entries!

We have 2 new beautiful Entries for the Complimentary Section of our Beads-of-Clay color Challenge! Thank you to our Challenge Artists for sharing your work with us! Jen Judd has done it again with a gorgeous piece featuring a Large Porcelain Button from Nancy of Round Rabbit. Here is Jen's description of her necklace.--

My entry for the Beads-of-Clay color challenge. It features a HUGE awesome button from Nancy at Round Rabbit. I used the colors and roundness to drive my choices for other beads...there's a slab of garnet, some mookaite spacers, a few bits of Roman glass (from www.happymangobeads.com) and a lampwork art bead that I bought on ebay years ago.
And Summer Hodgmen has combined fibers metal and ceramic in her Free Heart Necklace featuring a heart bead from Diane Hawkey. Here is how Summer describes her necklace--
Wow did I have a hell of a time coming up with an entry for this particular color scheme. Complimentary color schemes (two colors across from each other on the color wheel) are not intuitive. But I surely do like the way it came out!
There are two really interesting pieces here. The first and most obvious is the heart by Diane Hawkey. Isn't it gorgeous? The second is the orange yarn, which I braided. It's actually hand spun and hand dyed with Coreopsis flowers. I bought it at a Ren Faire last summer from a seller who works yarn using only traditional Viking methods. Cool, isn't it!
The orange beads are Carnelian and the blue are glass.

Thanks for your entries ladies! Do you want to join the fun? And have your chance at our Fabulous Beads-of-Clay prizes???? You still have time! This section of the challenge ends on March 5th when I choose a random winner from all our Complimentary Challenge Entries!

New Pendants

My kiln is back in order, thank goodness! The people at Orton are so nice, and even bought some pendants for me. These are the people that make the Orton controllers for digital kilns. I am lucky that they are right here in Westerville Ohio and I can go there for help.

Here are some of my new pendants just out of the kiln. I love the one on the left. These are 2 new glazes I just bought. The mint green is a lovely matte pearl, it is a great contrast with the glossy brown/green.

Beads of Clay Bead Swap

Recently a number of Beads-of-Clay members participated in a bead swap. This year I thought I would make a video of what I received. Hence the short video below. I had some technical problems so I apologize in advance for the lack of sound. Hopefully all the artists are clearly identified. Just in case, I am listing them all for your reference.
It takes a few minutes for the picture to come up so please be patient. Thanks.

Split Complimentary Challenge

Today is the start of our fourth Color Challenge! This is the Split Complimentary Color Challenge! This Section of the Challenge runs for 4 weeks from February 19th to March 19th.
This is how Wikipedia explains Split-Complimentary color schemes--A color Scheme that includes a main color and the two colors on either side of it's complimentary (opposite) color of the color wheel. Now what does that mean?... We will use the example above to help explain. First you need to find your first color (yellow-orange), next you need to draw an imaginary line through the center of the color wheel and find the color that is the opposite of your first color (blue-violet). You will not be using this second, opposite color, but you will be using the colors found on either side of this opposite color (violet and blue). So our finished color scheme in this example is Yellow-orange, Violet and Blue.

This is where the Challenging Part of our Challenge is found! I found it really tricky to come up with my design! This second photo was actually my first attempt. I was going to scrap the design, but I decided to share it with you as a second example. It was hard to find beads within my supply stash that worked together and still fit into my color scheme. An interesting thing happened while I was working. I found myself looking hard at the tint, tone and shade of each base color to find beads that worked into the plan.
Take for example the focal pictured above. My Color Scheme was Red-Orange, Green and Blue. I started with a very light green pendant A tint of green. A tint is when you add white to a color.
Next I found a small charm in a bold blue.
Third I needed to find a bead that would finish my color scheme. This bead needed to be a Red-Orange. I couldn't find anything in my stash that was purely red-orange, so I started to look for beads that were almost red-orange. I looked at browns. When I placed the beads on top of my color wheel I realized that the red-brown beads were pretty much exactly what my color wheel shows for the Shade of red-orange. A shade is found when you add black to a color.]
Here are my tips for this section of the challenge-
1) Start with the 2 colors that are more closely related. In my examples the colors where violet and blue in the first necklace, and blue and green in the second example. I found it easier to work out the bulk of the design in these 2 closely related colors and then accent my design with the third color.
2) Don't forget to use your tints, tones and shades. This really saved me from trying to run out to the bead store to find a perfect fit, and it helps your finished work look more natural. There is no need to always use the color wheel color at full intensity. (note- running out the bead store or your favorite artisan bead website for a perfect bead is wonderfully fun if you have the time ;-)
3) Don't Forget about this tool. http://websitetips.com/colortools/sitepro/ It has an option for finding Split Complimentary Color schemes. Just find Split Complimentary in the drop down menu on the right, then slide the box over the the rainbow area to see what different color combinations look like.
4) This one is hard! I'm going to have to pump up the prizes for all this work! Prizes will be announced next Friday February 26th

Complimentary Color Scheme Challenge

Today is the start of our third Color Challenge! This is the Complimentary Color Challenge! This Section of the Challenge runs for 4 weeks from February 5th to March 5th.

Complementary Colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, such as blue and orange, red and green, purple and yellow. You can find some bold combinations when working in opposites! It didn't come naturally to me when I started working on my example. I had to remind myself that Challenging was the name of the game! I find complimentary colors hard to take in large bright doses. So I found myself making 4 quick simple designs with just a few elements in a effort to banish my compliment complaint.
The Top image, uses an orange stoneware clay and recycled glass bulls eye pendant and a piece of a glass bottle which I tumbled a while back and my friend Staci drilled for me. Very bold indeed!

This second focal is one of my green bursts. I tried to take the normal Christmas colors and give a spring feel, but no luck! My husband called it a wreath ;-) It is fun to wear!

In this next necklace, I took yellow and purple, and tried to soften them up a bit. I used pale mustard yellow and soft translucent purple glass beads.
Lastly I have this blue and orange linen necklace. I love this style, and I actually made this one first. In this one, the blue is strong and the orange is paler.
I can't wait to see what everyone makes in for this Challenge!

This is my entry in the Beads Of Clay Color challenge. The challenge is based on color schemes found on a color wheel and a clay bead must be incorporated. The first challenge is to create something monochromatic. I chose blue-violet as my color and featured a stoneware connector made by Lisa Peters. Also in the mix is vintage crystal, glorious glass jump rings from Hanson Stone, a carved sodalite rose and a large glass "dZi" bead that I have had in my collection for years. Thanks for looking!
